About
Matthew Kuhnemann is a classical left-arm orthodox spinner who has built a reputation for accuracy, control, and economy across formats. Hailing from Gold Coast, Kuhnemann first caught the eye in Queensland’s Premier Cricket, where he picked up 35 wickets in the 2015–16 season, earning a rookie contract with Queensland in 2016–17.
He made his List A debut for Cricket Australia XI in 2017, dismissing Kurtis Patterson and taking a sharp catch to remove Peter Nevill. A former Australia U19 representative, Kuhnemann was soon earmarked as one of the country’s most promising spin prospects.
His breakthrough in T20 cricket came during the 2018/19 BBL season with the Brisbane Heat, where he stood out for his tight spells and ability to build pressure in the middle overs. Strong performances across white-ball formats led to his ODI debut in 2022 on Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka.
In early 2023, Kuhnemann was a late call-up to Australia’s Test squad for the India tour, stepping in due to the unavailability of Ashton Agar and Mitchell Swepson. He made an immediate impact, registering his maiden five-wicket haul (5/16) in just his second Test match—highlighting his temperament and skill in challenging subcontinental conditions.
