About
Ryan Burl is a dynamic left-handed middle-order batter and a handy part-time leg-spinner, known for his aggressive strokeplay and fearless attitude. A two-time Under-19 World Cup representative (2012 and 2014), Burl emerged as one of Zimbabwe’s brightest young talents early in his cricketing journey.
Despite his promising future, Burl initially chose to pursue university studies in Southampton, England. However, his passion for Zimbabwean cricket brought him back home. Turning down potential opportunities in English county cricket, he signed a first-class contract in Zimbabwe, citing his patriotism and desire to contribute to the game in his homeland.
Burl made his international debut in February 2017 against Afghanistan. His early career, however, was disrupted by injuries—including a serious shoulder dislocation sustained during a league game in England, which kept him sidelined for a significant period. On tour in Sri Lanka, he also had to be hospitalized due to an allergic reaction to fish, another setback in a turbulent start to his career.
Off the field, Burl gained global attention in May 2021 when he posted a viral tweet highlighting the harsh financial realities faced by Zimbabwean cricketers. A photo of his worn-out, glued-together shoes struck a chord with fans and the global cricketing community. The post prompted Puma to step in as official footwear sponsors for both Burl and the Zimbabwe team, marking a significant moment of advocacy and change.
Burl’s standout performance came in September 2022, during an ODI in Townsville, Australia, where he recorded sensational figures of 5/10—including three maidens—against a formidable Australian lineup. It was the second-best figures by a visiting spinner in Australia, and played a pivotal role in Zimbabwe’s historic victory on Australian soil.
In recent years, Burl has become a mainstay in Zimbabwe’s white-ball squads, offering explosive hitting in the lower middle order and valuable overs with the ball. His versatility and fearless approach have also earned him franchise contracts across the globe, further cementing his reputation as a valuable T20 asset.
Still young and fiercely committed, Ryan Burl represents the grit, resilience, and heart of modern Zimbabwean cricket.
