About
He bats, he bowls and he delivers at the highest level in both disciplines. Dhananjaya de Silva, a technically accomplished batter and a crafty off-spinner, has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s most valuable allrounders — a throwback to an era when batting was as much about artistry as it was about results.
De Silva’s rise followed a familiar Sri Lankan pathway, progressing through age-group cricket before earning selection in the national Under-19 squad. His breakthrough year came in 2015, when a series of strong domestic performances brought him firmly into the spotlight.
That season, he produced remarkable returns in the Super T20 Provincial Tournament, excelling across six innings. He then capped off a standout year by playing a pivotal role in Tamil Union’s first First-Class title in 55 years, scoring 868 runs at an average of 54.20. De Silva’s impact was not limited to batting alone — he also finished as his team’s leading wicket-taker, using his intelligent off-spin to great effect.
Those performances earned him a national call-up to Sri Lanka’s Test squad for the tour of the United Kingdom, and he made an immediate impression at the international level. Against Australia in his debut Test series, de Silva emerged as Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer, showcasing his composure and technique against elite opposition.
One of the defining moments of his early career came in a memorable partnership with Dinesh Chandimal, as the duo rescued Sri Lanka from a precarious position en route to de Silva’s maiden Test century. His reputation as a big-match performer grew further in 2017 during the pollution-hit Delhi Test against India, where he recorded the highest fourth-innings score by a visiting batter in India. Batting for 257 minutes, he scored a resolute 119 to help Sri Lanka salvage a draw.
Such achievements reflected his rapid rise. De Silva became the joint-fastest Sri Lankan to reach 1,000 Test runs, achieving the milestone in just 23 innings, a feat that contributed to him being named Sri Lanka Cricket’s Player of the Year in 2017.
With Sri Lanka undergoing a rebuilding phase and several senior players having moved on, de Silva’s experience, versatility and temperament position him as a central figure in the team’s future. Capable of influencing matches with both bat and ball, he remains a crucial allrounder in Sri Lanka’s evolving cricketing landscape.
