About
Sai Sudharsan’s cricketing ascent over the last few seasons has been as elegant as his strokeplay. A tall, composed left-hander with a classical technique and the ability to accelerate when needed, Sudharsan has steadily carved out a space for himself in Indian cricket across formats.
A Sporting Legacy and Early Breakthrough
Hailing from Chennai and born into a family of athletes — with both parents being sportspersons — cricket came naturally to Sudharsan. His breakout moment came during the 2021 Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) where, representing Lyca Kovai Kings, he finished as the second-highest run-scorer of the tournament. His consistent performances earned him a debut in limited-overs cricket for Tamil Nadu the same year.
Sudharsan was part of the Tamil Nadu squad that clinched the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy in 2022, and from there, his trajectory only moved upward. He quickly cemented his place in the state team across all formats, earning accolades in both white and red-ball cricket.
In the 2022-23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, Sudharsan amassed 610 runs in 8 matches, finishing as the third-highest run-scorer in the tournament. He followed that with a commanding Ranji Trophy debut, scoring centuries in each of his first two matches — a clear marker of his adaptability and hunger for runs.
International Recognition
Sudharsan's exploits in domestic cricket didn't go unnoticed. In late 2023, he earned a maiden India call-up for the ODI series in South Africa, a tour that saw many senior players rested. He grabbed the opportunity with both hands, scoring two contrasting half-centuries in the series, showcasing his versatility and composure under pressure.
IPL Journey: Steady Growth to Stardom
Sudharsan’s rise in the IPL has been one of consistency, growth, and big-match temperament.
-
2022: He was picked up by Gujarat Titans for INR 20 lakh in the auction and made an impact in his debut season, scoring 145 runs in five games, including a maiden IPL fifty.
-
2023: Promoted to No. 3, Sudharsan had a breakthrough season, scoring 362 runs in 8 innings, including a sensational 96 off 47 balls in the final against Chennai Super Kings — a performance that won hearts despite GT falling short.
-
2024: The southpaw firmly established himself as a key player for the franchise. He ended the season as Gujarat Titans’ highest run-scorer, piling up 527 runs at an average of 47.90, which included two fifties and a memorable century against CSK — a full-circle moment considering his heartbreak in the previous final.
His performances were rewarded when GT retained Sudharsan ahead of the 2025 IPL auction, handing him a bumper contract worth INR 8.50 crore, cementing his place as one of the cornerstones of the franchise.
Poised for the Next Leap
At just 24, Sai Sudharsan has already proven that he belongs at the highest level. Whether it's grinding runs in the Ranji Trophy, delivering under pressure in international ODIs, or stepping up on the grand IPL stage, the Chennai-born batter continues to impress with his poise and precision.
With his name now firmly in the national conversation, Sudharsan looks set to be a major figure in Indian cricket’s next generation — a beacon of calm in high-stakes moments and a batter with both style and substance.
