About
Standing tall at 6’8”, Marco Jansen commands attention every time he steps onto the field. Hailing from North West province, Jansen made his mark early, scoring an unbeaten 164 in a T20 match at the age of 9—a performance first spotted by his father, Koos, who coached both Marco and his twin brother, Duan. The Jansen twins’ talent was soon on display when they were selected as net bowlers for India’s 2018 tour of South Africa, where a 17-year-old Marco impressed none other than Virat Kohli.
A left-arm fast bowler with the ability to consistently hit speeds over 140 km/h, Jansen combines bounce, swing, and a growing bag of variations—including a sharp yorker and deceptive slower ball. His powerful lower-order batting only adds to his value as a genuine all-rounder. He made his List A debut in the 2017–18 season and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a highly-rated prospect in all formats.
In 2021, before making his international debut, Jansen was scouted and signed by Mumbai Indians for the IPL—an early testament to his raw potential. He made a brief appearance that season but did enough to earn a spot with Sunrisers Hyderabad the following year.
Jansen received his maiden international call-up for South Africa’s tour of Pakistan in early 2021 and made his Test debut against India in the Boxing Day Test later that year. His ODI and T20I debuts followed in 2022. Jansen was also part of South Africa’s squad for the 2022 T20 World Cup, replacing the injured Dwaine Pretorius, and was named in the final 15 for the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Still in the early stages of his career, Marco Jansen is widely seen as a long-term asset for South African cricket—an all-format pacer with the skillset and temperament to thrive on the global stage.
