About
Kusal Mendis has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s most promising batsman-keeper combinations in the post-Sangakkara and Jayawardene era. His rise began when he won the Schoolboy of the Year award in 2013, followed by his appointment as captain of the national Under-19 squad for the 2014 World Cup. His talent was quickly recognized at the senior level, earning him a Test debut in the home series against the West Indies.
Mendis first made headlines on the international stage with a stunning century against Australia at Pallekele, becoming the youngest Sri Lankan to achieve the feat. The innings was pivotal in rescuing Sri Lanka from a first-innings deficit, helping set the stage for a clean sweep in the series.
He continued his impressive form in limited-overs cricket during the tri-series in Zimbabwe, scoring two half-centuries and earning the Man of the Series award as Sri Lanka claimed the title. Back home, he followed it up with a remarkable 194 in a Test against Bangladesh and later notched his maiden ODI century.
At just 22, Mendis has already demonstrated a maturity beyond his years. A naturally aggressive batsman, he combines a pleasing range of strokes with tactical awareness, making him a vital asset in both Tests and limited-overs formats. His adaptability was further highlighted in the 2017 Champions Trophy and in the Test series against India, where he scored a stunning hundred in the second match, cementing his status as one of Sri Lanka’s leading young talents.
As Sri Lanka rebuilds, players like Kusal Mendis are expected to lead the way back to their golden era, providing the team with the consistency and class it needs to compete at the highest level.
