About

Charith Asalanka has emerged as a key figure in Sri Lanka’s white-ball setup since 2021, earning a reputation as an aggressive and dependable middle-order batter. A clean striker of the cricket ball, the left-hander brings both flair and substance to Sri Lanka’s limited-overs line-up.

Asalanka announced himself at the international level with an impressive T20I debut against India, scoring a brisk 44 off 26 balls that offered a glimpse of his attacking potential. However, it was during the 2021 T20 World Cup in the UAE that he truly made his mark. Asalanka finished the tournament as Sri Lanka’s leading run-scorer, amassing 231 runs at an average of 46.20 and a strike rate of 147.13, performances that cemented his place in the national squad.

While 2022 proved to be a challenging year for him in T20 internationals, Asalanka continued to develop his game in the 50-over format. That progression was highlighted by his maiden ODI century against Australia in the same year, underlining his ability to convert starts into match-defining innings.

Known for his consistency and temperament in the middle order, Asalanka is capable of stabilising an innings as well as accelerating when required. With the ODI World Cup set to be played in India, Sri Lanka will be hoping he delivers his best cricket on the biggest stage.

In addition to his batting, Asalanka offers useful off-spin, providing the team with a valuable all-round option. On spin-friendly surfaces, he has the potential to contribute crucial wickets and make a broader impact beyond his batting.

As Sri Lanka prepare for major tournaments ahead, Asalanka’s versatility and big-match pedigree make him a vital component of their limited-overs ambitions.
