About
Over the last decade, Sri Lanka has seen a steady flow of fast bowling talent, often marked by raw pace but plagued by recurring injuries — Dushmantha Chameera is a prime example. With a smooth run-up and a repeatable action, Chameera consistently clocks high speeds and uses his skiddy nature to trouble batters, often hurrying them off the surface despite not being expressively tall.
He broke into the domestic circuit in 2012, and it didn’t take long for him to make waves. By 2015, he had earned a call-up to the national team across all formats. Early impressions were promising, especially in limited overs cricket, where his pace and bounce added a new dimension to Sri Lanka’s attack. However, injuries have been a constant obstacle, particularly hampering his progress in red-ball cricket.
At one point, Chameera was regarded as the fastest bowler in the country, but his ability to stay fit has often determined his presence in the team. When fully fit, he's a genuine asset — capable of leading the pace attack with aggression and control.
His talent also caught the eye of IPL scouts, and in 2018, he was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals, becoming the latest in a line of Sri Lankan pacers to feature in the league. Injuries have limited his appearances, but the potential is unmistakable.
For Sri Lanka — a team in search of a reliable fast-bowling spearhead — Chameera's fitness and form could be the difference between a good pace attack and a great one. If he can stay on the park, there's no doubt he has the tools to become one of the best in the business.
