About
In a world where smartphones and social media have become inseparable from teenage life, Deepti Sharma charted a different path. At 18, while her peers explored virtual connections and curated digital personas, Deepti was more focused on honing her craft on the cricket field. So disconnected was she from technology that her first brush with WhatsApp came only when she had to join the Indian team’s group chat.
Ironically, it was that very group where she discovered the magnitude of her record-breaking knock—188 against Ireland in May 2017 in Potchefstroom. While most fans were engrossed in the IPL, Deepti made history. Her innings, then the second-highest individual score in Women’s ODIs, came alongside a 320-run opening stand with Punam Raut—the highest in international women's cricket at the time, and the first-ever 300+ stand in the format.
Deepti’s journey to that iconic moment began at just nine years old in Agra. Cricket wasn’t her first love—it was curiosity. Watching her elder brother Sumit, a local pacer with a Lakshmipathy Balaji-style action, earn praise lit a spark in young Deepti. She would relentlessly beg her father, a retired Indian Railways officer, to persuade Sumit to take her along to the nets.
Her breakthrough moment came not with bat or ball, but with a throw. One day, while watching a session at the Ekalavya Sports Stadium, Deepti was asked to return a stray ball. Her casual throw from the boundary hit the stumps directly. That moment caught the eye of Hemlata Kala, then chairperson of the BCCI Women’s Selection Panel. Mistaking her for a boy due to her haircut, Kala enquired about “him” and predicted a future India player. That moment lit the fire in Deepti.
Over the next few years, she faced repeated rejections in state selections—too young, they said. But Kala mentored her behind the scenes, taking her to Railway camps in Delhi and Allahabad, where Deepti continued refining her skills. Eventually, her raw talent and growing maturity drew the attention of Rita Dey, former India batter and selector, who helped guide her further.
Interestingly, off-spin wasn’t Deepti’s first craft. She started as a medium-pacer but switched to spin based on advice from coaches and selectors, who saw potential in her height and natural release. The transition wasn’t easy, but Deepti’s work ethic ensured success.
Her consistent performances for state and India A sides led to an international debut on 28 November 2014, against South Africa at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Despite India losing the decider, Deepti left her mark with crucial breakthroughs, registering the second-best bowling figures for India in that match.
Since then, Deepti has cemented her place in the national team as a reliable off-break bowler, gritty middle-order batter, and one of the sharpest fielders in the squad. By 19, she had already racked up multiple records and match-winning contributions.
Yet, her biggest strength might just be her game awareness and adaptability—traits that make her not just a dependable all-rounder but also a strong future leadership prospect for India.
In Deepti Sharma, Indian cricket has found a player who combines humility with hunger, simplicity with skill, and discipline with dynamism—a rare breed whose journey continues to inspire the next generation.
