About
Standing tall at 6'7", Jason Holder is a West Indian all-rounder known more for his clever seam and swing bowling than express pace or power hitting. A right-arm medium-fast bowler from Barbados, Holder is also a technically sound lower-middle order batsman.
Holder’s early promise was recognized when he won the prestigious Lord Gavron Award in 2009, given to an outstanding Barbados Under-19 cricketer. He featured in the 2010 Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand as West Indies’ leading wicket-taker with 13 wickets. Holder made his international debut in 2013 against Australia, earning attention with both his bowling and batting.
His ability to hit the deck hard and extract bounce quickly made him a regular in the West Indies ODI attack. Holder made his Test debut in 2014 against New Zealand, scoring a fifty while taking two wickets. When Dwayne Bravo stepped down as captain amid player disputes in 2014, Holder was appointed West Indies captain, leading the team through the 2015 and 2019 Cricket World Cups.
Although his captaincy received mixed reviews, Holder’s leadership shone during the 2017 Test series in England, where West Indies won a memorable match at Leeds— their first Test victory in England in 17 years. His personal best batting moment came in 2019, scoring an unbeaten 202 against England in a commanding win. That year, he also took his 100th Test wicket.
Post-captaincy, Holder’s role fluctuated but he made a strong comeback in the 2022 T20 World Cup, highlighted by a hat-trick against England.
In the IPL, Holder’s career has been inconsistent. Starting with Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013, he played sporadically before joining Kolkata Knight Riders in 2016. After a brief absence, he returned to SRH in 2020 with solid performances, earning retention in 2021. The 2022 Mega-Auction saw him picked by Lucknow Super Giants for INR 8.75 crore, and in 2023 he moved to Rajasthan Royals for INR 5.75 crore, continuing to deliver dependable performances.
