About
Shaheen Shah Afridi is widely regarded as one of the most exciting fast-bowling prospects in world cricket today. Standing tall with a gangly frame and armed with serious pace, natural bounce, and the advantage of being a left-armer, Shaheen has the perfect toolkit to trouble the best batters across formats. Add to that his ability to strike the ball cleanly with the bat, and he offers immense value as a genuine all-format cricketer.
Born into a family of seven in Khyber Agency, Shaheen is the youngest sibling and arguably the most gifted. While his early cricketing journey revolved around tennis-ball matches, it was his elder brother Riaz Afridi — a former Pakistan Test cricketer — who recognized his potential and guided him towards professional cricket. Under Riaz’s mentorship, Shaheen transitioned seamlessly into hard-ball cricket and quickly made his mark.
His rise through the ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. After gaining valuable experience in age-group cricket and domestic tournaments, Shaheen caught wider attention during the Pakistan Super League (PSL), where he showcased his skill set against top international talent. The league provided the ideal platform for him to mature quickly and toughen up for the global stage — all while still in his teens.
Shaheen made his international debut in the T20I series against the West Indies in 2018, impressing with his pace and variety. He was soon called up for the 2018 Asia Cup, where he made his ODI debut. The following year, he was selected for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup and emerged as one of Pakistan’s standout performers, claiming 16 wickets despite not featuring in all the matches. His ability to strike up front and deliver in the death overs highlighted his growing maturity and versatility.
In early 2019, Shaheen also made his Test debut, further underlining his all-format capabilities. However, his workload has become a point of discussion given his young age and injury history. Managing his fitness carefully, especially with the demands of all three formats, will be crucial for Pakistan going forward.
Still early in his career, Shaheen Afridi already carries the aura of a future leader of Pakistan’s pace attack. With proper handling, there is little doubt he can evolve into one of the most feared bowlers in the world.
