About

Ben Duckett, a flamboyant left-handed opening batter and occasional wicket-keeper, first appeared for England in 2016 but truly established himself under the Bazball regime in 2022. Coming through Northamptonshire’s age-group system, Duckett made his first-class debut at just 18 in 2013 and featured in England’s squad for the 2012 Under-19 World Cup, though he struggled in that tournament.

Duckett first grabbed attention with a stellar County Championship season in 2015, scoring over 1,000 runs including four centuries. He outdid himself in 2016, starting with a commanding 282* against Sussex and finishing the season with 1,338 runs at an average of 58.17, while also playing a key role in Northamptonshire’s T20 Blast triumph.

He made his international debut during England’s 2016 tour of Bangladesh, scoring fifties in two ODIs and making his Test debut shortly after. Despite glimpses of potential, Duckett struggled for consistency in Tests and was dropped after just two matches. Discipline and fitness issues, including a suspension in 2017, further hampered his progress. A move to Nottinghamshire in 2018 helped him rebuild his form, and he made a brief T20I appearance in 2019.

Duckett’s big break came in 2022 under Ben Stokes, who recognized his attacking flair and gave him license to play freely. In the Pakistan Test series, Duckett scored a 110-ball 107 and shared a record 233-run opening stand with Zak Crawley—the fastest double-century partnership in Test cricket history. He finished as England’s second-highest run-scorer on the tour, behind Harry Brook.

Since then, Duckett has been a key component of England’s Bazball approach, forming a destructive opening pair with Crawley and providing rapid starts. He scored 182 against Ireland in 2023, had a solid Ashes series at home, and contributed as a top-order batter in both Tests and ODIs. Duckett’s aggressive stroke-play and backing from the management have transformed him from an eccentric fringe player into a mainstay of England’s white-ball and red-ball sides.
