Zimbabwe Edge Namibia by Five Runs in Thriller After Record Seventh-Wicket Fightback

Zimbabwe survived a stunning late assault from Namibia to secure a five-run victory in the T20I tri-series, despite a record seventh-wicket partnership that took the hosts to within one big hit of a remarkable chase.

Chasing 196 for victory, Namibia looked out of the contest at 76 for 6 before Zane Green and Alexander Busing-Volschenk produced a sensational 110-run partnership. The pair transformed the game and left Namibia needing just 16 runs from the final over.

Zimbabwe held their nerve in a dramatic finish, however, with Brad Evans taking responsibility for the final over. Namibia ultimately fell five runs short, while Zimbabwe bounced back from their opening defeat to keep the tri-series wide open.

The result means Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa all have two points after the opening round of matches, with each side recording one win and one defeat.

Zimbabwe Recover from 101 for 6

Zimbabwe appeared to be heading towards a modest total after collapsing from 64 without loss to 79 for 5.

Brian Bennett and Ben Curran gave Zimbabwe an excellent start, putting on 64 runs during the powerplay. Bennett's dismissal off the final ball of the sixth over triggered a dramatic collapse.

JJ Smith dismissed Bennett at deep backward square leg before Bernard Scholtz bowled Dion Myers in the following over. Sikandar Raza then top-edged Gerhard Erasmus to deep square leg.

Curran was deceived by a slower delivery from Max Heingo, while Wessly Madhevere fell to Erasmus as Zimbabwe's innings suddenly lost momentum.

At 101 for 6 after 12 overs, even a total of 160 looked difficult.

Burl and Evans Turn the Game Around

Zimbabwe's lower order then produced a remarkable recovery.

Ryan Burl and Brad Evans combined for an unbeaten 94-run partnership, rescuing their side and setting a new national record for Zimbabwe's seventh-wicket partnership in T20Is.

Burl attacked the bowling with a series of boundaries, while Evans provided the acceleration Zimbabwe desperately needed. Evans struck Bernard Scholtz for consecutive sixes before the pair took control of the innings.

The final over proved decisive. With Zimbabwe already on 175, Burl smashed Gerhard Erasmus for six, four, four and another four to collect 20 runs from the over.

Burl reached his fifty in the process, and Zimbabwe finished on a competitive 195 for 6.

Namibia Collapse Before Stunning Fightback

Namibia's chase began poorly, with two early chances going down. Louren Steenkamp survived a difficult chance at short cover, while Jan Frylinck was dropped at deep square leg.

Zimbabwe soon tightened their fielding, though, with Steenkamp falling to Wessly Madhevere and Erasmus being caught by Brian Bennett.

The Zimbabweans continued to take their chances, with Burl, Curran and Bennett among those producing important catches.

Curran completed an excellent piece of fielding when he took a one-handed catch to dismiss Frylinck for 22, leaving Namibia struggling at 76 for 6 at the beginning of the 12th over.

At that stage, Zimbabwe appeared to have the match firmly under control.

Green and Busing-Volschenk Launch Stunning Assault

Alexander Busing-Volschenk had other ideas.

The 21-year-old immediately attacked Wellington Masakadza, charging down the pitch and launching him for six. He repeated the shot soon after, before striking Sikandar Raza over the boundary.

Busing-Volschenk then pulled Evans for another six, while Zane Green steadily built his innings at the other end.

Green exploded in the 18th over, taking 17 runs from Newman Nyamhuri, including a six and two fours. He followed that with another 15-run over against Blessing Muzarabani, bringing up his fifty and setting up a thrilling final over.

Namibia entered the last over needing 16 runs.

Dramatic Final Over Gives Zimbabwe Victory

Evans was handed the responsibility of defending the total, but his first delivery was called a no-ball, increasing the pressure on Zimbabwe.

Busing-Volschenk brought up his fifty from the first legitimate delivery of the over, while Green was already on 54.

Green attempted to push for two but was run out after Sikandar Raza produced a direct hit.

Busing-Volschenk then took matters into his own hands, striking Evans through the covers for four. Namibia now needed six runs from three balls.

But the match turned dramatically.

Busing-Volschenk was caught behind by a spectacular one-handed diving catch from Tadiwanashe Marumani. Bernard Scholtz was subsequently run out at the non-striker's end after hesitating over a possible single.

With Namibia's final hope resting on Jack Brassell, Evans bowled him with the last delivery.

Zimbabwe had completed a dramatic team hat-trick and escaped with a five-run victory.

The result was a huge relief for Zimbabwe, who now have less than 24 hours to recover before facing South Africa in their next match.
