West Indies cruise to eight-wicket win over Zimbabwe in first T20I

Jahzara Claxton and Karishma Ramharack delivered impressive all-round performances as West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by eight wickets in the first T20I in Harare to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.

Ramharack claimed three wickets while Claxton contributed with two wickets and an unbeaten 31 as West Indies successfully restricted Zimbabwe to 97 for 9 before chasing down the target in just 11.5 overs.

Afy Fletcher also played a major role in the victory. The experienced spinner took two wickets and four catches, setting a new record for the most catches by a West Indies fielder in women's T20I cricket.

Zimbabwe struggle after being put in

West Indies chose to bowl first and immediately put pressure on the Zimbabwe batting lineup. The hosts reached only 40 for 3 at the halfway stage, with Ramharack accounting for two of the early wickets.

Beloved Biza top-scored for Zimbabwe with 21 from 24 balls, while captain Josephine Nkomo contributed to a 24-run fifth-wicket partnership with Biza.

The partnership came at just a run-a-ball and was the highest stand of Zimbabwe's innings.

Wicketkeeper-opener Modester Mupachikwa made 20, but needed 33 deliveries to reach that score. Zimbabwe struggled to find boundaries throughout the innings, recording more than 60 dot balls and just seven fours.

Only three of those boundaries came during the final five overs as the Zimbabwe innings failed to gain momentum.

West Indies did offer Zimbabwe some assistance through extras, conceding 10 runs, including eight wides and a no-ball. Despite that, the visitors maintained control and restricted the hosts to 97 for 9.

West Indies make light work of the chase

West Indies made a blistering start to the chase, reaching 12 without loss after only two legal deliveries. Eboni Brathwaite struck a six, while six wides from Kudzai Chigora added to the rapid opening.

Brathwaite and Claxton then put together a 38-run partnership from just 25 balls. Brathwaite eventually fell for a quickfire 23 off 14 balls, but the visitors remained firmly in control.

Realeanna Grimmond continued the attack, smashing five fours and a six during her 25-ball 34.

Claxton initially played the supporting role but accelerated towards the end of the chase. Her unbeaten 31 ensured West Indies crossed the finish line comfortably.

Grimmond was dismissed with the scores level, leaving Stafanie Taylor to complete the victory by scoring the winning run from the only delivery she faced.

Claxton's unbeaten 31, combined with her contribution with the ball, earned her the Player of the Match award.

West Indies will now look to build on their dominant opening performance when the two sides meet again in the second T20I.
