Wareham, Potts Lead Welsh Fire to 15-Run Victory Over London Spirit

Georgia Wareham's late batting surge and Grace Potts' impressive bowling performance helped Welsh Fire end their Hundred campaign on a high as they defeated London Spirit by 15 runs at Sophia Gardens.

Batting first after being asked to do so, Welsh Fire posted 138 for 7 from their 100 balls before dismissing London Spirit for 123. The victory was Fire's third home win in four matches and secured them a fifth-place finish in the competition.

Welsh Fire made a strong start, reaching 49 for 1 during the powerplay. Georgia Voll found the boundary regularly early on, while Freya Kemp continued her impressive form after scoring an unbeaten 72 against Sunrisers Leeds on Sunday.

Kemp smashed 26 from just 14 balls, including five boundaries, but her dismissal, followed by Sarah Bryce's wicket, slowed the innings considerably. London Spirit's bowlers, led by Grace Harris, Nadine de Klerk and Charis Pavely, kept the scoring under control.

Captain Charlie Dean was particularly effective, finishing with 2 for 18 from her 20 balls. However, Wareham ensured Welsh Fire finished strongly.

Wareham accelerated dramatically at the end of the innings, scoring a half-century from 34 balls. She smashed 22 runs from her final eight deliveries to lift Fire to a competitive 138 for 7.

London Spirit's chase got off to a disastrous start. Grace Harris was dismissed for another single-figure score in a disappointing campaign, while Marie Kelly fell to Potts with the very next delivery.

Potts bowled the opening ten balls and claimed 2 for 4 before returning later to remove Amy Jones. At one stage, she had outstanding figures of 3 for 9 from 15 balls.

London Spirit attempted to rebuild through Charis Pavely and Charlie Dean, with Pavely hitting three consecutive boundaries against Potts. However, Welsh Fire continued taking wickets and the required run rate steadily climbed.

Seren Smale and Deandra Dottin briefly raised hopes of a late fightback, with Dottin hitting Wareham for six. But the target proved too demanding, and Spirit were eventually bowled out for 123.

Potts finished with 3 for 23 and was named Player of the Match, while Orla Prendergast, Sophia Smale and Heather Graham claimed two wickets each.

Speaking after the match, Potts said the team had benefited from making an early impact with the ball and praised the competitive performances they had produced throughout the season.

Although Welsh Fire missed out on qualification, the victory provided a positive finish to their campaign, while London Spirit ended a disappointing season with another defeat.
