Santner Turns Down BBL Offer to Prioritize New Zealand Cricket

New Zealand all-format star Mitchell Santner has decided to put international cricket ahead of a lucrative opportunity in the Big Bash League (BBL), turning down a two-year contract offer from Adelaide Strikers.

The Strikers, who recently signed England all-rounder Ben Stokes, had approached Santner with a deal that would have required him to give up his New Zealand central contract. Santner admitted the financial package was attractive but said the prospect of playing Test cricket against India and Australia ultimately influenced his decision.

“When you look ahead to the summer we've got, India here for white ball and Tests and Australia away — there's not many bigger than that — it's quite an exciting time,” Santner told the New Zealand Herald. “I'd like to still be part of that.”

Santner acknowledged that he seriously considered the offer but believes there is still an important role for him in New Zealand's Test plans, even if he does not play every match.

“The offer was good, I'm not going to lie,” he said. “I did entertain the thought of it, but coming back to what we've got coming up, even if I'm not going to play every game of Test cricket, I still feel like there's a role for me.”

Captaincy Also Played a Key Role

Another major factor in Santner's decision was his desire to continue leading New Zealand's white-ball teams.

The 34-year-old has served as New Zealand's ODI and T20I captain since late 2024. Under his leadership, the Black Caps have reached the finals of both the Champions Trophy and the T20 World Cup.

There had been discussions about Santner potentially retaining the captaincy while playing under a casual contract instead of holding a central contract. However, he said that arrangement did not feel appropriate to him at this stage of his career.

“I don't want to give up captaincy,” Santner said. “If that was part of the deal, it was a no-brainer for me. There were chats that it could have worked. But for me, sitting without a central contract and trying to captain, I don't know if that would sit right at this stage.”

New Zealand Balancing International and Franchise Cricket

New Zealand Cricket's central contracts require players to remain available for the Super Smash, the country's domestic T20 competition, which currently overlaps with the BBL and South Africa's SA20 tournament in January.

With international and franchise cricket increasingly competing for players, NZC has adopted a flexible approach. The board has allowed several players to enter casual playing agreements, giving them greater freedom to participate in overseas T20 leagues while remaining available for New Zealand when required.

Mark Chapman is the latest New Zealand player expected to take that route, with a BBL deal reportedly set to be confirmed. He would join Finn Allen, Tim Seifert, Lockie Ferguson and Adam Milne, who have already operated under similar arrangements.

The situation could look significantly different for New Zealand players from next year, with the planned launch of NZ20 set to replace the Super Smash.

For now, however, Santner has opted to remain within New Zealand Cricket's central-contract structure, prioritising a potentially significant international summer that includes home fixtures against India and an away series against Australia.

For the New Zealand captain, the opportunity to remain involved in those major international contests proved more valuable than the financial lure of the BBL.
