Ratnayake's All-Round Brilliance Helps Sri Lanka Seal Asian Games Bronze
Tharindu Ratnayake produced a sensational all-round performance as Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 63 runs to claim the bronze medal in the men's cricket competition at the Asian Games.
Sri Lanka 165 for 9 (Ratnayake 65, Arachchige 33; Mahedi 2-19, Saif 2-28, Mustafizur 2-43) beat Bangladesh 102 (Nasum 26; Sahan 2-17, Thushara 2-18, Ratnayake 2-18, Viyaskanth 2-26) by 63 runs
After rescuing Sri Lanka with a blistering 65 off just 32 balls, Ratnayake returned with the ball to claim two wickets as Bangladesh were bowled out for 102 in 17.3 overs.
Known primarily for his ambidextrous bowling, Ratnayake showcased his batting ability when Sri Lanka needed it most. He smashed five sixes and seven fours during his explosive innings and shared a crucial 93-run sixth-wicket partnership with captain Sahan Arachchige from only 46 balls.
Sri Lanka in trouble early
Sri Lanka's top order once again struggled, continuing the problems that had plagued them in their semi-final against India.
They were reduced to 21 for 4 after just four overs. Sineth Jayawardena and Lasith Croospulle fell in the third over, while Nuwanido Fernando was dismissed for one. Sohan de Livera was then run out attempting a second run.
The collapse left Sri Lanka's top four contributing very little, but Arachchige steadied the innings from No. 5, first adding 33 runs with Ashen Bandara.
Ratnayake then changed the game completely.
Ratnayake's explosive rescue act
Ratnayake launched his assault with a switch-hit six off Saif Hassan before targeting Mustafizur Rahman. The left-arm seamer conceded 25 runs in the over, including seven wides, two no-balls, two fours and a six.
Ratnayake continued his attack against Rishad Hossain, striking a reverse-hit six in an over that cost Bangladesh 16 runs.
He brought up his half-century from just 26 balls in the 18th over, before adding two fours and another six. Despite being dropped late in the innings, Ratnayake had already done the damage.
Sri Lanka finished strongly, scoring 64 runs in the final five overs to post 165 for 9.
Bangladesh's chase falls apart
Sri Lanka carried their momentum into the second innings.
Nuwan Thushara struck early, removing Saif Hassan, before Ratnayake joined the attack and dismissed Tanzid Hasan and Towhid Hridoy with his spin. Thushara also accounted for Litton Das with a well-directed yorker.
Bangladesh briefly threatened to recover, but Sri Lanka's spinners quickly regained control.
Vijayakanth Viyaskanth dismissed Parvez Hossain Emon for 22, while Mahedi Hasan fell lbw off the very next delivery. Wanuja Sahan then produced a sharp return catch to remove Rishad Hossain before bowling Yasir Ali.
Nasum Ahmed top-scored for Bangladesh with 26, but his resistance ended when he was dismissed by Sri Lanka captain Arachchige in the 18th over.
Bangladesh were eventually bowled out for 102 in 17.3 overs, giving Sri Lanka a comprehensive 63-run victory and the bronze medal.
Ratnayake's match-defining contribution with both bat and ball proved decisive, turning a difficult start into a memorable podium finish for Sri Lanka.
