Namibia Stun South Africa by 18 Runs in Windhoek T20I Opener
Namibia produced a memorable performance in front of a lively home crowd on Friday, defeating South Africa by 18 runs in the opening match of the tri-series in Windhoek.
Batting first after being asked to do so, Namibia posted 163 for 9, with Jan Frylinck top-scoring with 60 and Louren Steenkamp contributing 41. South Africa's bowlers fought back strongly after a promising start from the hosts, but Namibia recovered enough to set a challenging target.
South Africa's chase never fully got going despite a brilliant 75 off 50 balls from Dewald Brevis. The young batter kept his side in contention with an aggressive innings but received little support from the rest of the top order. Debutant Duan Jansen provided some late resistance with an unbeaten 25, but South Africa eventually finished on 145 for 9.
Ruben Trumpelmann and JJ Smit were Namibia's standout bowlers, taking three wickets apiece. Trumpelmann finished with 3 for 24, while Smit claimed 3 for 31 as Namibia successfully defended their total.
Frylinck and Steenkamp provide flying start
Namibia made an explosive start after being put into bat. Frylinck and Steenkamp added 84 for the opening wicket, including 57 runs during the powerplay.
Frylinck benefited from an early reprieve when Jordan Hermann failed to hold on to a catch. He made South Africa pay for the mistake, reaching his half-century with a six off Brevis before eventually falling for 60.
Steenkamp was dismissed for 41, triggering a collapse in the Namibian innings. The hosts lost nine wickets for just 79 runs after their opening partnership, with South Africa's spinners taking advantage of the middle overs.
Prenelan Subrayen was particularly impressive, finishing with 3 for 32. Bjorn Fortuin also claimed two wickets for 17 runs, while Brevis chipped in with wickets as South Africa fought their way back into the contest.
Brevis keeps South Africa in the hunt
South Africa's chase suffered early setbacks as Namibia's young bowlers put the visitors under pressure.
Jack Brassell dismissed Jordan Hermann, while Trumpelmann removed Lhuan-dre Pretorius. Eighteen-year-old Max Heingo then struck in his first over by bowling Tony de Zorzi, leaving South Africa struggling at 39 for 3.
Brevis initially found it difficult to score freely, but once the required rate climbed above 10 an over, he shifted gears. He launched an aggressive counterattack, including a no-look six against Bernard Scholtz and consecutive sixes off Heingo.
Brevis brought up his half-century from 39 balls and continued attacking whenever an opportunity arose. His innings gave South Africa renewed hope and reduced the required run rate to a manageable level.
However, Namibia held their nerve at the crucial moment.
Trumpelmann and Smit seal Namibia's victory
Brevis' dismissal proved decisive. Attempting to pull a full toss from Trumpelmann, he edged the ball towards short third, where Brassell completed an excellent catch.
South Africa needed 31 runs from the final two overs, but Namibia's disciplined bowling ended the contest. Gerhard Erasmus conceded only three runs in the penultimate over and dismissed stand-in captain Fortuin.
Smit then delivered the finishing blow, taking two wickets in two balls to close out the innings and secure an 18-run victory.
The result maintains Namibia's unbeaten record against South Africa in T20Is, with the two sides having now met twice in the format.
South Africa will have an opportunity to bounce back when they face Zimbabwe on Saturday, while Namibia will take confidence from an impressive opening victory in the seven-match tri-series.
