Matt Milnes Keeps Gloucestershire in Check as Kent Finish Day One Strongly

Kent finished the opening day of their Rothesay County Championship clash against Gloucestershire at 71 for 1, trailing by 158 runs after Matt Milnes' impressive four-wicket haul helped dismiss the visitors for 229.

Kent, who need 20 points to secure promotion, opted to bowl first on a heavily grass-covered pitch at Canterbury. Gloucestershire initially struggled but recovered through James Bracey and Ollie Price, who top-scored with 86 and 52 respectively.

Milnes made an early breakthrough when Joe Phillips edged a delivery to Sam Northeast at first slip in only the second over. Gloucestershire then built a 62-run partnership between Price and Tom Boorman before Ekansh Singh dismissed Boorman for 29 shortly before lunch.

Gloucestershire went into the interval at 74 for 2, with Price continuing to anchor the innings.

Kent continued to make inroads after lunch. Matt Quinn removed Miles Hammond for 14, with Tawanda Muyeye taking the catch at third slip, before Keith Dudgeon trapped Price lbw.

Milnes struck again when Kamran Dhariwal was caught by Muyeye for 2, while Khaled Ahmed accounted for Daaryoush Ahmed and Sai Kishore before dismissing Che Simmons to leave Gloucestershire in trouble.

However, Matt Taylor helped Gloucestershire recover, and they reached 208 for 8 by tea. Bracey, who had been struck on the leg earlier in the innings, returned to the crease with Boorman acting as his runner.

The pair added a valuable 58 runs for the ninth wicket before Milnes completed his four-wicket haul. He first had Bracey caught by Northeast at gully before taking a sharp return catch to dismiss JT Langridge for a duck.

Bracey's injury forced Hammond to take over the wicketkeeping duties.

Kent's reply began badly when Langridge trapped Zak Crawley lbw for just 1 in the third over. Ben Compton and Sam Northeast then steadied the innings, putting Kent in a comfortable position by the close.

Compton remained unbeaten on 33, while Northeast was 27 not out when play ended.

With the light deteriorating late in the day, the umpires instructed Gloucestershire to use their spinners. After two overs of spin, play was eventually called off, leaving Kent on 71 for 1 and 158 runs behind Gloucestershire's first-innings total.
