Kate Cross’ Four Wickets Keep Lancashire in Knockout Contention

Kate Cross made an immediate impact at the start of her farewell season, claiming four wickets as Lancashire edged past Hampshire by four wickets in the Metro Bank One-Day Cup.

Cross, who recently announced that she will retire from professional cricket at the end of the season, produced her best bowling figures of the campaign. The England great finished with 4 for 33, helping Lancashire restrict Hampshire to 223.

Playing her first match since announcing her retirement, Cross struck three times with the new ball. She dismissed Ella McCaughan and Georgia Adams in quick succession before removing Maia Bouchier to leave Hampshire struggling at 29 for 3.

Her opening five-over spell yielded an impressive 3 for 15, putting Lancashire firmly in control.

Freya Kemp then provided Hampshire with much-needed momentum, smashing 61 from 54 balls with powerful strokeplay on the leg side. Alongside Rhianna Southby, Kemp helped rebuild the innings before both batters departed.

Abi Norgrove carried the fight into the closing stages, scoring an unbeaten 70. It was her fourth half-century of the One-Day Cup campaign, and her composed innings helped Hampshire reach a competitive 223.

However, Cross returned at the crucial stage to prevent Hampshire from pushing beyond 223, bowling Bex Tyson to complete her four-wicket haul.

Lancashire’s chase was steady rather than spectacular, but they remained close to the required rate throughout. Emma Lamb was the key figure, producing a composed 68—her third score above 50 in the competition.

Eve Jones contributed a patient 16 from 45 balls before being bowled by Georgia Adams, while Gaby Lewis fell leg-before-wicket to Amanda-Jade Wellington.

Lamb kept Lancashire on course before her dismissal, caught after attempting a scoop. Tilly Kesteven and Ellie Threlkeld also made useful starts but failed to convert them into substantial scores.

Despite the late pressure, Lancashire held their nerve to reach 224 for 6, securing a four-wicket victory and a third consecutive win.

The result keeps the defending champions firmly in contention for a place in the knockout stages, while Cross’ four-wicket performance provided a memorable start to the final chapter of her 21-year association with Lancashire and Emirates Old Trafford.
