Jemimah Rodrigues Ruled Out of Women's T20 Asia Cup and Asian Games With Hamstring Injury

India batter Jemimah Rodrigues has been ruled out of the upcoming Women’s T20 Asia Cup in the UAE and next month’s Asian Games in Japan after suffering a high-grade hamstring tear.

Rodrigues sustained the injury to her right hamstring while playing for Southern Brave against Welsh Fire in England’s Women’s Hundred. Following further assessment at the BCCI Centre of Excellence, the injury was confirmed as a high-grade tear.

The setback means Rodrigues will miss two important assignments for India as the team continues its preparations for major international competitions.

Pratika Rawal earns maiden T20I call-up

Pratika Rawal has been named as Rodrigues’ replacement in India’s Asia Cup squad and will receive her maiden T20I call-up. The BCCI, however, is yet to announce a replacement for Rodrigues in the Asian Games squad.

Rawal has recently returned to fitness after recovering from the injury that forced her to miss India’s Lord’s Test last month. She had been scheduled to join Warwickshire for the One-Day Cup.

The 25-year-old has not played a T20 since the Challenger Trophy in November 2024, where she scored 142 runs at a strike rate of 111.81. She is also yet to make her debut in the Women’s Premier League after an ankle injury suffered during last year’s ODI World Cup ruled her out of UP Warriorz’s campaign.

For the Asia Cup squad, Rawal was preferred over Anushka Sharma and Harleen Deol, both of whom have previously represented India in T20Is.

Shreyanka Patil also misses out

India will also be without all-rounder Shreyanka Patil, who continues to recover from an ankle ligament injury. Legspinner Prema Rawat, who replaced Patil during the previous squad selection, has retained her place.

Wicketkeeper-batter G Kamalini has also been included in the Asia Cup squad. She was selected for the Asian Games as a replacement for Yastika Bhatia and is expected to provide backup to first-choice wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh.

India begin Asia Cup campaign against Thailand

The Women's T20 Asia Cup will begin on August 28 in the UAE, with the final scheduled for September 13. India are placed in a group alongside Pakistan, Thailand and Hong Kong.

India will begin their campaign against Thailand on August 30 before facing Pakistan on September 5. All matches will be played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

The absence of Rodrigues will be a significant blow for India, with the team now having to adjust its batting combination ahead of the tournament.
