Iyer Faces Tough Opening Call as India Prepare to Take on Afghanistan in Delhi

India captain Shreyas Iyer faces a major selection dilemma at the top of the order as India prepare to take on Afghanistan in the opening T20I in Delhi. With Sanju Samson back in the squad, Iyer must choose two openers from Samson, teenage sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and explosive left-hander Abhishek Sharma.

The decision comes at a crucial stage for an Indian side that is undergoing a transition. Samson enters the contest with a strong claim after being named Player of the Tournament at the T20 World Cup, while Sooryavanshi impressed during India's recent series in Zimbabwe. Abhishek, meanwhile, was preferred over Samson when the young Sooryavanshi made his international debut in England.

For Iyer, the opening combination is only one of several selection challenges ahead of the Afghanistan series. The captain will also be eager to make an impact with the bat after recently leading India to their first series defeat in three years.

Afghanistan eye opportunity in Delhi

Afghanistan arrive in Delhi with a largely familiar core but under new T20I captain Ibrahim Zadran. Despite not playing a T20I since the World Cup in February, the visitors have plenty of experience in Indian conditions and will see the series as an opportunity to challenge a team still finding its best combination.

Delhi also has a strong connection with the Afghan community. Lajpat Nagar, around 12.5 kilometres from the Arun Jaitley Stadium, is home to thousands of Afghans and is often referred to as "Mini Kabul". Afghan restaurants, shops, pharmacies and currency exchanges are a familiar part of the neighbourhood.

On the field, however, Afghanistan will be hoping to provide India with a stern challenge.

Naveen or Farooqi?

Afghanistan's biggest selection question is likely to involve their pace attack. The team must decide whether to play one or two specialist seamers alongside allrounder Azmatullah Omarzai.

If only one seamer is selected, Fazalhaq Farooqi and returning pacer Naveen-ul-Haq are expected to compete for the spot. Playing both could force Afghanistan to leave out one of their spin options, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Noor Ahmad potentially facing the squeeze.

Rashid Khan will be another major threat for India. The Afghanistan leg-spinner is just seven wickets away from becoming the first bowler to claim 200 wickets in T20 internationals.

India weigh allrounder options

India's selection headache extends beyond the opening combination. The team have several allrounders competing for places, including Nitish Kumar Reddy, Washington Sundar, Axar Patel and Shivam Dube.

With Rinku Singh absent, India could also face a difficult decision over the No. 8 position. The management must choose between a specialist bowler who offers less with the bat and a batting allrounder whose four-over workload may not always be guaranteed.

India used a batting allrounder at No. 8 during the England series before opting for a specialist bowler in Zimbabwe. The conditions in Delhi could influence which approach Iyer and the team management take.

A likely Indian combination includes two of Abhishek Sharma, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Sanju Samson at the top, followed by Ishan Kishan, Iyer and Tilak Varma. Axar Patel, Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy could provide additional allround depth, with Arshdeep Singh, Jasprit Bumrah and Varun Chakravarthy expected to lead the specialist bowling attack.

Delhi conditions could favour big scores

The Arun Jaitley Stadium was not among the highest-scoring venues during the IPL season, but it still conceded an average of 9.63 runs per over. With relatively short boundaries, the surface could favour aggressive batting if early-season seam movement does not play a major role.

The weather is also unlikely to cause significant disruption. With the monsoon largely retreating from northern India, the conditions are expected to remain suitable for a full night game.

Sooryavanshi eyeing another record

Should Vaibhav Sooryavanshi feature in the series, he will become the youngest player from a Full Member nation to play international cricket in India.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan veteran Mohammad Nabi is already the oldest player from a Full Member side to appear in a T20I in India. Nabi is also 52 runs away from becoming the first Afghan batter to score 2,500 T20I runs.

Iyer, meanwhile, has already created a record of his own. He has won the toss in each of his first nine international matches as captain.

Iyer focused on handling pressure

The India captain acknowledged the responsibility that comes with leading the side through a period of injuries and transition. Iyer said his focus would be on making the right decisions under pressure while trusting the players available to him.

He also addressed India's recent injury concerns, pointing out that the intensity of modern cricket makes injuries difficult to avoid.

With Afghanistan possessing experienced match-winners such as Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, India will need to get their combinations right from the outset.

For Iyer, the first major call will come before the match even begins: choosing which two of Samson, Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma will open the innings.
