Ireland Collapse After Amy Hunter Fifty as Issy Wong Claims Maiden Five-Wicket Haul
Ireland suffered a dramatic batting collapse in the second ODI against England in Derby, losing their final six wickets for just 25 runs to be bowled out for 165. Amy Hunter's fighting half-century was unable to prevent the hosts from taking control, while Issy Wong produced a career-best performance with her maiden international five-wicket haul.
Wong finished with impressive figures of 5 for 33 from her 10 overs, including the crucial wicket of Hunter. Off-spinner Mady Villiers also played a key role, taking the wickets of Orla Prendergast and Rebecca Stokell before helping complete Wong's five-wicket haul with a sharp catch.
England won the toss on a pleasant late-summer afternoon in Derby and opted to bowl first. They made one change to the team that won the opening match in Leicester, with Ryana MacDonald-Gay replacing Lauren Filer.
Hunter Battles to Half-Century
Ireland's innings got off to a difficult start. Alice Tector was run out in the second over after a quick piece of fielding from Sophia Dunkley at mid-off. Wong then struck again, dismissing Ireland captain Gaby Lewis with a delivery that moved back into the batter and crashed into leg stump.
With Ireland reduced to 83 for 4 before the halfway mark, Hunter and Leah Paul attempted to rebuild the innings. The pair added 57 runs for the fifth wicket, giving Ireland some much-needed stability.
Villiers made an immediate impact after being introduced in the 22nd over. She bowled a wicket maiden, dismissing Prendergast for 25 from 48 balls. In her following over, she removed Stokell for just three, leaving Ireland in further trouble.
Hunter was fortunate to survive on 27 when she struck the ball back towards Villiers, who was unable to complete the catch after her follow-through left her moving in the opposite direction.
The opener continued to struggle for boundaries but eventually reached her half-century from 79 balls. It was her 11th ODI fifty and the slowest of her international one-day half-centuries.
Wong Destroys Ireland's Lower Order
England's bowlers continued to apply pressure after Hunter reached her fifty. Wong returned to the attack and broke the fifth-wicket partnership by bowling Paul through an inside edge.
She then claimed the wicket of Louise Little, who was dropped by wicketkeeper Alice Capsey before eventually being caught at mid-off.
Wong completed her career-best figures when Cara Murray was caught at mid-off. Her fifth wicket came when Hunter attempted to attack the bowling, only to find Villiers at deep midwicket.
Tilly Corteen-Coleman then wrapped up the Irish innings, taking two wickets in her 10th over as Ireland were bowled out for 165 at the end of the 47th over.
England now require 166 runs to win the second ODI and take an unassailable lead in the three-match series.
