Eden Carson Returns as New Zealand Recall Bella James, Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe for Australia T20Is

New Zealand have recalled offspinner Eden Carson for their three-match T20I series against Australia, with Bella James, Molly Penfold and Hannah Rowe also returning to the squad for the upcoming tour.

The series, beginning on October 18, will mark New Zealand's first international assignment of the 2026-27 season and form part of their preparations for the inaugural 2027 Women's Champions Trophy in India.

Carson returns to the White Ferns after a lengthy injury layoff following elbow surgery. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since December last year but has now completed her rehabilitation and is ready to return to international cricket.

"To be back in the White Ferns environment is really special," Carson said. "The rehab process has taken a lot of patience, but I've been fortunate to have great support around me and I'm feeling ready to get back out there and contribute."

New Zealand have also recalled experienced fast bowler Hannah Rowe, who last played a T20I in September 2024. Rowe has taken 24 wickets in 47 T20Is and was part of the New Zealand A squad that toured Sri Lanka in May.

Fast bowler Molly Penfold, who has played 11 T20Is since making her international debut in 2022, also returns after last featuring against Zimbabwe in March.

Wicketkeeper-batter Bella James has been brought back to strengthen the batting lineup following the retirement of veteran Suzie Bates. James has played just one T20I for New Zealand, making her debut in March 2025, and was also part of the New Zealand A tour of Sri Lanka.

The recalls come after the retirements of Bates, Sophie Devine and Lea Tahuhu, prompting New Zealand to bring a mix of experience and emerging talent into the squad.

Regular wicketkeeper Izzy Gaze will miss the series after undergoing surgery on a thumb injury. New Zealand Cricket said Gaze is working towards a return to playing in early 2027. Polly Inglis will take over wicketkeeping duties in her absence.

Melie Kerr will captain a squad featuring 11 members of New Zealand's T20 World Cup squad from June. Dean Brownlie, who has served as the team's batting coach for nearly four years, will take charge as interim head coach following the departure of Ben Sawyer.

Brownlie said the tour would provide the squad with an opportunity to test themselves against one of the world's leading teams.

"There's a balance of experience and future-focus in this squad and it's going to be a chance for the group to test themselves against a quality side," Brownlie said. "Competing against the best in the world is always going to be a challenge, but it also provides a lot of opportunities to learn and strengthen skillsets within that."

New Zealand will depart for Australia on October 12 and play a warm-up match against a Governor-General's XI on October 15. All three T20Is against Australia will be played at North Sydney Oval.
