Charlie Allison Century Rescues Essex as Somerset Struggle to Break Through

Charlie Allison produced a superb unbeaten century to lead a remarkable Essex fightback against Somerset on the third day of their Rothesay County Championship Division One clash at Taunton.

After being forced to follow on, Essex reached 314 for 3 at stumps, wiping out their first-innings deficit and taking a three-run lead over Somerset, who had posted 469.

The 21-year-old Allison remained unbeaten on 105 from 219 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and two sixes. Matt Critchley provided excellent support with an unbeaten 76 as the pair shared a crucial fourth-wicket stand of 187.

Their partnership completely changed the complexion of the match after Somerset had dominated the opening stages of the day.

Somerset Strike Early

Essex resumed their second innings at 59 without loss, with Dean Elgar and Paul Walter looking comfortable against a Somerset attack led in the absence of injured captain Lewis Gregory by James Rew.

The pair extended their partnership to 82 before Jake Ball finally broke through. Walter, who had reached 43, attempted to drive a good-length delivery but was bowled through the gate.

Elgar continued to make progress and reached his half-century from 91 balls, including eight fours. However, the former Somerset batter fell for 56 after edging a defensive shot from Migael Pretorius through to wicketkeeper Rew.

Essex were suddenly 127 for 2 and Somerset quickly added another wicket. Captain Tom Westley was dismissed without scoring when he drove Jack Leach into the air, with Tom Abell taking a straightforward catch at cover.

At 135 for 3 at lunch, Essex were still 176 runs short of avoiding an innings defeat, and Somerset appeared to be firmly in control.

Allison and Critchley Turn the Match

The afternoon session belonged to Essex as Allison and Critchley gradually took control on a pitch that offered little assistance to either seam or spin.

Allison initially adopted a cautious approach before beginning to attack. He reached his half-century from 88 balls, including eight fours, and signalled his growing confidence with a six over long-on against Leach.

The partnership between the two batters reached 100 from 225 deliveries, and Essex went into tea at 232 for 3, with Allison unbeaten on 60 and Critchley on 39.

Somerset tried to make use of the second new ball after the interval, with Pretorius repeatedly finding the edge of the bat without securing a breakthrough. From the other end, however, the hosts struggled to generate sustained pressure as the pitch continued to flatten.

Allison eventually completed his fourth first-class century from 185 balls, reaching the landmark with a single off Leach. His innings proved invaluable in dragging Essex from the brink of an innings defeat to a position of control.

Critchley remained composed at the other end and brought up his second fifty of the match from 170 deliveries.

Somerset were handed a significant opportunity when Critchley edged a turning delivery from Leach, but Gregory spilled a straightforward chance at first slip. The missed opportunity proved costly, with Critchley later striking a boundary in the final over to take Essex into the lead.

Somerset Face Tough Final Day

Somerset managed only three wickets throughout the day and now face a difficult final morning if they are to secure victory.

The hosts had appeared to be heading towards a dominant win when Essex were reduced to 135 for 3, but Allison and Critchley's unbroken stand of 187 has completely transformed the contest.

Somerset's hopes of a first-ever County Championship title remain alive, but they will need early breakthroughs on the final day to regain control of a match that had looked firmly in their favour.

For Essex, Allison's determined century and Critchley's composed support have turned a potentially heavy defeat into a genuine contest, with the visitors now holding a narrow three-run advantage heading into the final day.
