Brook, Buttler and Baker Star as England Crush Sri Lanka by 119 Runs

Harry Brook smashed his second and fastest T20I century as England produced a dominant all-round performance to beat Sri Lanka by 119 runs in the first T20I at the Utilita Bowl.

Brook's unbeaten 114 off just 42 balls propelled England to a mammoth 254 for 4, with Jos Buttler providing crucial support with an explosive 80 from 44 deliveries.

The victory gave England a commanding start to the series, while Sri Lanka's chase never got going and ended at 135 all out with six balls remaining.

Brook and Buttler Put England in Control

England's innings was built around a spectacular partnership between Brook and Buttler. The pair added 128 runs from just 60 deliveries, putting Sri Lanka under pressure from the opening stages.

England raced to 90 for 1 in the powerplay, their second-highest powerplay total in T20Is. Debutant Aneurin Donald made an immediate impact, smashing 12 from five balls after coming into the side as a replacement for the injured Phil Salt.

Brook then took control, particularly targeting Dunith Wellalage, whose over disappeared for 30 runs.

Buttler was given an opportunity when he was dropped on 45 by Eshan Malinga at long-off. The England batter made Sri Lanka pay, accelerating towards his 50 in just 29 balls before eventually finishing with 80.

Brook, meanwhile, continued his assault and brought up his century in only 42 deliveries. His unbeaten 114 included a combination of powerful boundary hitting and aggressive running between the wickets.

England finished their innings with 19 fours and 12 sixes, underlining their dominance with both bat and running between the wickets.

Baker Leads England's Bowling Attack

Sri Lanka's chase got off to a disastrous start when Sonny Baker bowled a maiden over.

The Hampshire fast bowler then produced the best bowling figures of his international career, finishing with 3 for 12.

Baker struck with genuine pace, beating Kamil Mishara with a delivery approaching 90mph before removing Lahiru Udara, who picked out Adil Rashid while attempting a scoop.

His third wicket came when Maheesh Theekshana's off stump was knocked back by another rapid delivery that moved away from the batter.

All six England bowlers claimed at least one wicket as Sri Lanka struggled against a relentless attack.

Only Dunith Wellalage offered meaningful resistance, scoring 33 from 21 balls at No. 8, but his efforts were nowhere near enough to rescue the visitors.

Sri Lanka were eventually dismissed for 135 with an over remaining, giving England a comprehensive 119-run victory.

Donald Makes Immediate Impression

England's debutant Aneurin Donald also provided an early spark at the top of the order.

The 29-year-old Glamorgan batter smashed 12 from his first five deliveries and became the first Glamorgan player to represent England since Simon Jones in 2005.

With Phil Salt unavailable, Donald was given an opportunity after impressing England's coaching staff during the Lions' warm-up match against Sri Lanka.

His fearless approach immediately paid dividends as he struck Maheesh Theekshana for a six and a boundary in the opening over.

Although his stay at the crease was brief, Donald's aggressive start helped England establish the momentum that ultimately carried them to their huge total.

Buttler Rediscovers His Best Form

Buttler's 80 continued his impressive recent run at the Utilita Bowl.

After scoring 131 against India at the same venue, Buttler has now accumulated 211 runs in his last two T20I innings in Southampton.

The veteran batter's latest innings was a reminder of his ability to dominate once he settles at the crease. His four boundaries from Dushmantha Chameera in the second over showcased the trademark power and timing that have made him one of England's most dangerous white-ball batters.

Despite turning 36 last week, Buttler continues to play an important role in England's evolving T20 setup.

Sri Lanka's Bowling Plans Backfire

Sri Lanka struggled to contain England throughout the first innings, with their bowling plans coming under increasing pressure as the run rate climbed.

Theekshana, usually trusted during the powerplay and at the death, was targeted heavily after Donald attacked his opening over. Buttler then took 13 runs from his second over.

Captain Charith Asalanka subsequently looked elsewhere, but the decision failed to stem England's scoring.

Wellalage conceded 30 runs in one over and later gave away 16 in his final over, while Dasun Shanaka conceded 19.

The surface at Southampton offered little assistance to the slower bowlers, with the ball generally skidding through rather than gripping.

England ultimately capitalised on the conditions and Sri Lanka's bowling errors, producing one of their most emphatic T20I victories.

With Brook, Buttler and Baker leading the way, England now take a significant advantage into the remainder of the series.
