Brevis Blasts South Africa to Seven-Wicket Win Over Zimbabwe in T20I Tri-Series

Dewald Brevis once again produced a match-winning performance as South Africa bounced back from their opening-day defeat to Namibia with a commanding seven-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the T20I tri-series.

Chasing 145 for victory, South Africa raced to 146 for 3 in just 13.5 overs, with Brevis remaining unbeaten on a spectacular 75. His second consecutive half-century helped South Africa secure their first points of the series and move level with Namibia on two points.

Zimbabwe, after making a promising start, could manage only 144 for 8 from their 20 overs. Brian Bennett top-scored with 34, while Tadiwanashe Marumani contributed 30. South Africa's bowlers fought back strongly in the second half of the innings, with Duan Jansen taking 3 for 45 and Senuran Muthusamy Subrayen claiming 2 for 27.

Zimbabwe Make Fast Start Before Losing Momentum

Zimbabwe began confidently, with Ben Curran taking the attack to South Africa during the opening overs. Curran smashed 24 from just 11 balls, including three boundaries off Jansen, before attempting to clear mid-on and being caught by Tony de Zorzi.

Bennett and Marumani continued the momentum, helping Zimbabwe reach 76 for 1 after 10 overs. However, the innings quickly lost direction after that point.

Zimbabwe added only 68 runs while losing seven wickets during the final ten overs. South Africa's combination of spin and pace applied the pressure, preventing Zimbabwe from building the total they needed.

Jansen was the most successful bowler despite being South Africa's most expensive, while Subrayen also played an important role in restricting the Zimbabwean middle order.

Brevis Takes South Africa Home

South Africa's chase began positively, but once Dewald Brevis arrived at the crease, the match quickly moved beyond Zimbabwe's reach.

Brevis immediately attacked the bowling, launching Newman Nyamhuri over long-off for six after Nyamhuri had dismissed Hermann. He then punished Blessing Muzarabani with three boundaries in a single over before taking Zimbabwe's bowlers apart.

Graeme Cremer suffered particularly heavily. Brevis smashed consecutive sixes off the spinner, with one disappearing beyond the stadium and reportedly needing to be retrieved from the parking area.

Brevis reached his half-century from just 24 balls and continued his assault, eventually finishing unbeaten on 75. His innings contained a series of powerful sixes and crisp boundaries as South Africa completed the chase with more than six overs to spare.

Zimbabwe's bowling attack struggled to contain him, with Cremer conceding 32 runs from his two overs on his return to international cricket. Wessly Madhevere and Sikandar Raza were the most economical options, conceding a combined 34 runs from their eight overs.

De Zorzi's Slow Start Raises Questions

While South Africa enjoyed a comfortable victory, Tony de Zorzi's form will be one area of concern.

De Zorzi was dismissed for just 15 after scoring nine in the opening match against Namibia. On both occasions, he failed to score at a run-a-ball and was dismissed attempting an aggressive shot.

However, South Africa have limited batting options in the squad following Jason Smith's injury, meaning De Zorzi is likely to receive further opportunities during the series.

The 27-year-old has now played nine T20Is and will be hoping to find his rhythm as the tournament progresses.

South Africa Back on Track

The victory gives South Africa two points and puts them level with hosts Namibia at the top of the tri-series standings, while Zimbabwe remain without a win.

South Africa's response was emphatic after their 18-run defeat to Namibia in the opening match. Brevis' back-to-back unbeaten or match-defining performances have emerged as a major positive for the team.

The tri-series takes a break on Sunday, with Namibia scheduled to face Zimbabwe on Monday.
