Amelia Kerr, Georgia Plimmer Power New Zealand to 80-Run Win Over South Africa in 1st T20I
to a commanding 80-run victory over South Africa women's national cricket team in the first T20I at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui.
New Zealand posted a challenging total of 190 for 7 before restricting South Africa to 110 for 7, taking a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
Kerr and Plimmer Build a Match-Winning Partnership
New Zealand suffered an early setback when Izzy Gaze was run out without facing a ball. However, Kerr and Plimmer quickly took control of the innings with a remarkable 146-run partnership that laid the foundation for a formidable total.
Kerr continued her impressive form with a superb 78 off just 46 balls, marking her fourth consecutive fifty-plus score. Her innings featured 11 fours and two sixes, with most of her runs coming through crisp boundaries. She dominated the offside with elegant stroke play while also displaying innovation with scoops and sweeps.
Plimmer, returning after missing the Zimbabwe ODI series due to a shoulder injury, initially took time to settle. She reached 37 from her first 32 balls before accelerating after the halfway stage. Her aggressive hitting included a six off Nonkululeko Mlaba and two more off Chloe Tryon, eventually finishing with a valuable 63.
Klaas Leads South Africa’s Late Fightback
Despite the early dominance from the New Zealand batters, Masabata Klaas stood out with the ball for South Africa. She consistently troubled the batters with well-disguised slower deliveries and clever variations.
Klaas dismissed Kerr with a leg-cutter before removing Brooke Halliday in the following over, finishing with impressive figures of 2 for 15 from her four overs. South Africa also managed to pull things back at the death, claiming the last six wickets for just 44 runs to keep New Zealand under the 200 mark.
South Africa Struggle in the Chase
South Africa’s chase never really gained momentum. The visitors lost both openers, Sune Luus and captain Laura Wolvaardt, early in the fourth over to Jess Kerr. They managed only 19 runs in the powerplay and struggled to accelerate thereafter.
Tazmin Brits top-scored with 29 from 35 balls, but the slow scoring rate made the target increasingly difficult to chase.
Devine Shines With the Ball
New Zealand captain Sophie Devine starred with the ball, producing a career-best T20I performance of 4 for 12. She mixed pace cleverly and used slower deliveries effectively to dismantle South Africa’s middle order.
Devine dismissed Tryon in the 12th over, removed Brits in the 15th, and returned in the 19th over to claim two more wickets, ensuring South Africa never threatened the target.
Bates Returns to the Side
Veteran all-rounder Suzie Bates made her return to the New Zealand XI after recovering from a quadriceps injury. Although she did not get the opportunity to bat, Bates contributed with the ball, finishing with figures of 0 for 17 in her two overs.
With the opening victory secured, New Zealand now hold a 1-0 advantage in the five-match series as both teams continue preparations ahead of the upcoming women’s T20 World Cup.
