Sanjay Govil, owner of Major League Cricket (MLC) franchise Washington Freedom and co-owner of The Hundred's Welsh Fire, is keen to expand his portfolio of T20 cricket franchises. He is considering acquiring either a 50% stake or full ownership of a BBL club, depending on the investment opportunity and financial viability. Cricket Australia approved the privatisation of the BBL last month following months of debate. The first phase of the Melbourne Renegades' sale process has already begun, with Cricket Australia, Cricket Victoria and their consultant, Raine Group, inviting expressions of interest for a 100% sale of the franchise. Several Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise owners are expected to explore opportunities, with the aim of identifying a preferred buyer ahead of the BBL 2026-27 season, which begins on December 12. Renegades and Hurricanes on Govil's Radar Govil confirmed that he is monitoring the Renegades' sale process but acknowledged that competition among prospective buyers could be intense. "I'm interested in the Renegades, it's on the radar," Govil told ESPNcricinfo. "But I think there are going to be a lot of big players who will be interested. I need to focus on what I am capable of doing. I don't want to get into a bidding war." The entrepreneur is also interested in the Hobart Hurricanes, particularly because of the existing connections between the franchise and his Washington Freedom team. Several players feature for both sides, while Ricky Ponting, the Hurricanes' head of strategy, has coached Freedom for the past three seasons. Govil believes smaller franchises could offer greater opportunities to make a meaningful impact. "(Hurricanes)... that's our size of team. If you look at the Welsh Fire and Freedom, we have sort of smaller franchises compared to others," he said. "There are the big boys who want to go after the big teams. I love Hobart, they are a winning team. We can make more impact in those teams." New Hobart Stadium Could Attract Investment The Hurricanes could become an attractive investment opportunity because of Tasmania's plans for a proposed billion-dollar, enclosed stadium, which is expected to become the franchise's home ground from 2031. Cricket Tasmania hopes the new facility will strengthen the club's commercial appeal and help attract private investors. Govil, who is funding the development of a cricket ground for Washington Freedom in Frederick, Maryland, said he would be open to investing in the Hurricanes' proposed stadium. "I absolutely would be interested," he said. "Would have to look at the economics and all that stuff, but I'm all for making sure that we have the best facilities." The Washington Freedom ground, located around 70 kilometres north of Washington DC, is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and could be ready for the 2027 MLC season. BBL Privatisation Models Differ Across States While Cricket Victoria is preparing for a potential full sale of the Renegades, other state cricket associations are considering retaining majority ownership of their franchises. Cricket Tasmania is among those more likely to favour selling a 49% minority stake to a private investor while retaining the remaining 51%. However, no final decisions have been made by states other than Victoria. Govil's previous investment in Welsh Fire offers a possible model for such arrangements. He initially acquired a 49% stake in the Hundred franchise before increasing his holding to 50%. The American entrepreneur has emphasised that he wants an active management role rather than simply investing capital. "I'm not just looking to be an investor. I love actively managing teams," Govil said. "The teams I have...I have at least 50% or 100% stake." Govil Opposes Franchise Rebranding One of the major concerns surrounding the BBL's privatisation is the possibility that new investors could change established team identities, names and colours. The issue has gained attention in England's The Hundred, where the Oval Invincibles were transformed into MI London following an investment by Reliance Industries Limited, the owners of the Mumbai Indians. Govil, however, said he does not support rebranding simply for commercial reasons. His position could make him an appealing potential investor for clubs such as Perth Scorchers, whose name and colours have strong recognition in Western Australia. "I don't believe in change for the sake of it," he said. "I always believe that local identity and local culture is very important. I strongly believe that the traditions need to continue." He added that franchises should focus on strengthening their existing identities rather than abandoning their histories. "I think we need to keep building on the history and the tradition. That's how I see it." Sports Franchises as Long-Term Investments Govil's interest in the BBL reflects the growing appeal of sports franchises as long-term investment assets, particularly as investors look for industries that artificial intelligence is unlikely to replace. With Washington Freedom in the United States and Welsh Fire in England already part of his portfolio, a BBL acquisition would give Govil a presence in three major cricket markets. He views live sport as a unique combination of entertainment, teamwork, community and commercial opportunity. "Sport is something that AI cannot replace in the future," Govil said. "It's a great asset. It's a great diversification asset. It's fun. It's sports. It's teamwork. It encompasses everything that people enjoy." Govil also expressed confidence in the BBL's position in the global T20 landscape, describing it as one of the most attractive opportunities for investors seeking exposure to franchise cricket. "To me, the BBL is probably the number two T20 league in the world. I think it's a great opportunity to get into," he said. With the Renegades' sale process underway and other BBL franchises considering different ownership structures, Govil's next move will depend on the financial terms, level of control and long-term growth potential offered by prospective investments.

New Zealand's promising power-hitter Bevon Jacobs is set to make his Big Bash League (BBL) debut after signing a short-term deal with Brisbane Heat for the upcoming season. Jacobs will join compatriot Tim Robinson at the franchise, replacing English all-rounder Tom Curran, who will miss the start of the competition due to family commitments. Jacobs is scheduled to feature in Brisbane Heat's opening match against Sydney Sixers at home on December 15, followed by away fixtures on December 17 and December 21. Curran is expected to join the squad ahead of the Boxing Day clash against his former team, the Sydney Sixers. The BBL commitments will overlap with New Zealand's domestic red-ball competition, the Plunket Shield, forcing Jacobs to miss Auckland's four-day match against Central Districts, which begins on December 15 in Napier. He will return to Auckland duties after completing his stint in Australia. Tim Robinson Opts for Casual Contract While Jacobs will join Brisbane Heat for a limited period, Tim Robinson has committed to the franchise for the entire BBL season after giving up his domestic contract with Wellington to sign a casual deal. Robinson's decision means he will miss the entire Super Smash season, New Zealand's domestic T20 competition, as well as one Plunket Shield fixture. Following Robinson's departure from his full-time contract, Wellington have handed a permanent deal for the 2026-27 season to 20-year-old fast bowler Ryan Tsourgas. The youngster represented New Zealand at the 2024 Under-19 World Cup and has been part of Wellington's wider squad over the past two domestic seasons. Jacobs Brings Extensive Franchise Cricket Experience Although Jacobs is yet to feature in the BBL, he has already built an impressive record in franchise cricket around the world. His experience includes stints with Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL), MI Emirates in the ILT20, Quetta Gladiators in the Pakistan Super League, Antigua and Barbuda Falcons in the Caribbean Premier League and Desert Vipers in the Global Super League. The right-handed batter also enjoyed a remarkable run during the previous Super Smash season, scoring five consecutive half-centuries. The achievement saw him equal Devon Conway's record for the most successive fifties by a New Zealand batter in domestic cricket. Jacobs has also demonstrated his ability to perform in Australian conditions. During the 2024 T20 Max competition, he smashed a century off just 40 balls, attracting the attention of the Mumbai Indians' scouting network. More recently, he toured Australia with New Zealand A for the Top End T20s in Darwin in August. Jacobs scored 58 off 30 deliveries against a Hobart Hurricanes Academy attack featuring fast bowler Billy Stanlake and ambidextrous spinner Nivethan Radhakrishnan, helping New Zealand A secure victory. Brisbane Heat Excited to Welcome Jacobs Queensland Cricket's general manager of high performance, Bennett King, expressed excitement about Jacobs joining the franchise, highlighting the batter's power-hitting ability and versatility. "Bevon has been on our recruiting lists since he showed his power and skill in the KFC T20 Max a few seasons ago and it's been exciting to see him earn his first international caps since then," King said in a statement. He added that Jacobs had demonstrated his ability to contribute both at the top of the order and as a finisher, expressing confidence that he would make a valuable contribution to Brisbane Heat. India T20Is First on Jacobs' Agenda Before heading to Australia for the BBL, Jacobs will turn his attention to international cricket. He is part of New Zealand's squad for the upcoming five-match T20I series against India, which begins in Christchurch on October 22. The series will provide Jacobs with another opportunity to strengthen his credentials in the shortest format before taking on his new assignment in the BBL. Brisbane Heat Squad Xavier Bartlett, Max Bryant, Tom Curran, Lachlan Hearne, Bevon Jacobs, Spencer Johnson, Usman Khawaja, Matt Kuhnemann, Michael Neser, Nathan McSweeney, Matt Renshaw, Tim Robinson, Callum Vidler, Hugh Weibgen and Jack Wildermuth.
