Keith Barker Retires from Professional Cricket After Warwickshire Return

Warwickshire all-rounder Keith Barker has announced his retirement from professional cricket with immediate effect at the age of 39, bringing an end to a career spanning more than 15 years.

Barker returned to Warwickshire this season on a 12-month contract after spending the previous seven seasons with Hampshire. However, his comeback was disrupted by a knee injury, which restricted him to just two County Championship appearances.

His final first-class appearance came in Warwickshire's drawn match against Yorkshire at Scarborough in June.

Barker finishes his first-class career with an impressive record of 5,554 runs at an average of 28.33 and 544 wickets at 25.00 from 171 matches. He claimed 23 five-wicket hauls and scored six centuries.

His best bowling figures in an innings were 7 for 46, recorded for Hampshire against Nottinghamshire in 2021. Earlier in his career, he produced match-winning figures of 11 for 70 against Durham in 2012, helping Warwickshire secure the County Championship title.

A left-arm seamer and left-handed batter, Barker also made a significant contribution in limited-overs cricket, taking 158 wickets across List A and T20 cricket and scoring more than 1,000 runs in white-ball cricket.

Before committing himself fully to cricket, Barker was also a talented footballer. He represented England at youth level up to Under-20s before choosing to pursue a career in cricket.

Reflecting on his retirement, Barker said Warwickshire had always held a special place in his life.

"It's difficult to put into words what Warwickshire means to me," Barker said. "I first came to the club in 2008 and spent ten years here, before seven brilliant seasons at Hampshire and then getting the opportunity to come back and finish my career where it all started."

Barker also paid tribute to Hampshire, describing his time at the club as a major part of his career and saying it had given him lasting memories and friendships.

"I always knew this day would come, but that doesn't make it any easier. In my head I still want to compete, still want the ball in my hand and still believe I can make a difference. Unfortunately, after a long career and plenty of injuries, my body is telling me it's time," he said.

The all-rounder's career also included a difficult period in 2025, when he received a 12-month backdated suspension after testing positive for a prohibited substance during a routine drugs test.

Warwickshire described the incident as an "administrative error", explaining that Barker had been prescribed a like-for-like alternative for a long-standing medical condition. The National Anti-Doping Panel concluded that he had not been seeking a competitive advantage.

Barker acknowledged the support he received from the Professional Cricketers' Association (PCA), particularly during that period.

"Their support has meant a huge amount to me and is something I'll always be grateful for," he said.

After returning to the club where his professional journey began, Barker will now walk away from the game with a career defined by his contributions with both bat and ball, as well as his strong connection with Warwickshire and Hampshire.

"To finish my career where it started, in a city that became my home and at a club that will always mean so much to me, feels incredibly special," Barker said.

"I'm going to miss playing more than I can put into words, but I'll walk away proud, grateful and thankful to everyone who has been part of the journey."
