Jake Weatherald to join Warwickshire ahead of 2027 Ashes

Australian opener Jake Weatherald is set to join Warwickshire for the early stages of the 2027 County Championship season as he looks to regain his form ahead of next summer’s Ashes series.

The 31-year-old was recently dropped from Australia’s Test squad after a disappointing start to his international career. Weatherald made his Test debut in the first match of the 2025-26 Ashes series but has managed just 20.36 as his batting average after six Tests.

His latest scores of 0 and 23 came during Australia’s shock defeat to Bangladesh, prompting the selectors to replace him with Matt Renshaw. Renshaw is expected to open alongside Travis Head in the second Test in Mackay.

Weatherald will now return to England after an impressive first county stint with Leicestershire earlier this year. He scored 483 runs at an average of 60.37 from nine innings and will spend the early part of the 2027 Championship season with Warwickshire at Edgbaston.

“I’m thrilled to be joining Warwickshire for the 2027 season. Edgbaston is one of the great grounds in world cricket and the opportunity to represent such a prestigious county was something I couldn’t pass up,” Weatherald said.

“I enjoyed playing in England this year so to have the opportunity to join the Bears ahead of the Ashes is really exciting. Warwickshire has a proud history and a talented squad, and I’m looking forward to contributing both on and off the field.”

Warwickshire performance director James Thomas welcomed the signing, describing Weatherald as a proven performer who will add strength to the top of the batting order.

“Jake is a player we’ve admired for a long time. He is a proven performer who has scored heavily at the highest level and gives us additional strength at the top of the order,” Thomas said.

“He scored runs for Leicestershire this summer and will be eager to come back to England and impress ahead of the Ashes next year. We think he will be a fantastic fit for our dressing room and an exciting player for our members and supporters to watch.”

Weatherald’s signing is likely to reignite debate over the practice of English counties recruiting Australian players shortly before an Ashes series. Such moves have previously attracted criticism because English players have far fewer opportunities to play first-class cricket in Australia.

During last winter’s Ashes, England captain Ben Stokes questioned the practice, pointing out that Australian players can benefit from county cricket before facing England, while English cricketers rarely receive comparable opportunities in the Sheffield Shield.

Warwickshire could also welcome back Australia allrounder Beau Webster next summer. Webster enjoyed his recent stint with the Bears and described the club as his “second home”, expressing his desire to return in the future.

For the remainder of the current Championship season, Warwickshire’s overseas options include India’s Manav Suthar, who will join after India’s Test series in Sri Lanka, and New Zealand batter Will Young.

Warwickshire are currently third in Division One, five points behind leaders Nottinghamshire. However, they will be without injured batter Sam Hain, who is recovering from a knee injury, for their upcoming fixture against Sussex.

The club have also recently lost experienced left-arm seamer Keith Barker, who announced his immediate retirement. Meanwhile, Warwickshire have secured the futures of George Garton, Vansh Jani, Zen Malik and Rob Yates with two-year contract extensions.
